The Role of Glutathione in the Body

Glutathione is a protein in the body that helps vitamins C and E work more effectively.

Recent studies has proven that glutathione and other antioxidants are not only important for our health – they’re critical. Without these important antioxidants, the body will be less able to protect itself from the harme caused by free radicals, the toxic by-product of oxidants. Glutathione is present in every cell in your body – it plays a vital role in your health and provides you with an increased energy level. There are a number of health benefits experienced with increased amount of glutathione in the body:

  • Improves the immune system
  • Slows down the aging process
  • Prevents intracellular inflammation
  • Detoxifies the body

Glutathione can be found in meat, walnuts, fish, fruits and vegetables, especially asparagus and avocados. Composed of three amino acids, glutathione is a tri-peptide which is also called the “master antioxidant.”

Glutathione has been shown to:

  • Protect us against cancer causing cells and other diseases
  • Inhibit viruses
  • Regulate immune cells
  • Synthesize proteins and prostaglandin
  • Repair and synthesize DNA
  • Transport amino acids

Glutathione Deficiency

While lacking glutathione in the body may not cause an outbreak of symptoms, there are certain diseases and medical conditions that have been associated with a glutathione deficiency. Cardiac diseases, dysfunction of the hepatic and premature aging of the immune systems have been associated to low levels of glutathione in the body. Although they may not be directly caused by the low levels of glutathione, they are certainly aggravated by it.

Chronic glutathione deficiency is a serious health issue that should be attended by a physician who may treat it with intramuscular or intravenous injections of the antioxidant. Daily doses of 500 mg of vitamin C can also help raise glutathione levels 50% in just fourteen days.

All of the published articles (92,000) in the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s Pub Med all tell the same story. Glutathione is the best antioxidant you can have in the battle against destructive free radicals. Free radicals occur as a by-product of the natural workings of your cells. Glutathione stops the chain reactions caused by free radicals before they can spread through the body’s systems.

With over 74 disorders and diseases associated with lack of glutathione and oxidative stress, maintaining proper levels of glutathione is important.

How Effective Are Glutathione Supplements?

In the last decade, more and more brands of oral glutathione supplements have been developed and sold to the market. Most of them are inexpensive and are made readily available everywhere. These supplements tout the benefits of the “Master Antioxidant” but manufacturers fail to inform consumers about one very important fact about glutathione. Glutathione does not easily pass our body’s digestive tract. What we need is a product that can provide an enriched cellular environment so WE can produce our own glutathione.

A very recent study (Sep 2011) from the Journal of Alternative & Complementary Medicine of the Bastyr University Research Institute from Kenmore, Washington State, US was done to identify the effect of oral glutathione supplementation on intra-cellular glutathione levels and bio-markers of systemic oxidative stress in humans.

A randomized clinical trial was done on 40 healthy adults. Results state that “There were no differences in oxidative stress biomarkers between groups at baseline…changes were non-significant between groups at week 4…total reduced, oxidized and ratio measures of GSH status were also unchanged.”

This result only proves that taking oral glutathione supplements will not be beneficial for us because it will not get the job done. Glutathione is something that we need to create internally and not something that we orally take.

Fortunately, there are two breakthrough supplements by Max International that give the body all that it needs to create glutathione this way.
